1974 Bronze Medal D1974-1b, Spokane Expo Large
Strike Type
Coin Details
Description
Swoger catalog number D1974-1b. This large-format bronze medal was struck at the United States Mint in Philadelphia for Expo '74, the environmental World's Fair in Spokane, Washington. The exposition's focus on environmental themes was prescient — topics included water quality, air pollution, energy conservation, and urban renewal, all issues that would dominate public policy for decades. The centerpiece of the fairgrounds was the Spokane Falls, the natural waterfall on the Spokane River that had been obscured by industrial development for a century. Expo '74 restored public access to the falls and created the park that now surrounds them. The Swoger catalog (D-series), compiled by Tom Swoger, documents modern U.S. Mint commemorative medals from 1956 onward. This large bronze is the base-metal large-format issue in the D1974-1 Spokane series.
