Coin Details
Description
Swoger catalog number D1973-2e. This bronze cable car centennial medal was struck at the United States Mint facility in San Francisco. The San Francisco cable car system reached its centennial in 1973 still operating three of its original routes, though the system was aging and would require a major $60 million overhaul beginning in 1982. The cable cars operate by gripping a continuously moving underground cable running at 9.5 miles per hour, controlled by a gripman who uses a lever mechanism to clamp and release the cable. Each cable is 1.25 inches in diameter and runs in a slot between the rails. The Swoger catalog (D-series), compiled by Tom Swoger, documents modern U.S. Mint commemorative medals from 1956 onward. This bronze medal struck at San Francisco is the base-metal companion to the D1973-2c silver version.
