Coin Details
Description
Swoger catalog number D1973-4a. This silver medal was struck at the United States Mint in Philadelphia to honor Samuel Adams and Patrick Henry as part of the American Revolution Bicentennial program. The bicentennial events of 1773-1774 included Adams's organization of the Boston Tea Party on December 16, 1773, and Henry's increasingly forceful advocacy for colonial rights in the Virginia House of Burgesses. Both men were pivotal in moving colonial opinion from grievance to revolution. Adams served as governor of Massachusetts from 1793 to 1797, while Henry served five terms as governor of Virginia. Their combined influence on the political philosophy of American independence was immense. The Swoger catalog (D-series), compiled by Tom Swoger, documents modern U.S. Mint commemorative medals from 1956 onward. This silver medal is the precious-metal version of the D1973-4 Adams & Henry series.
