Description
Swoger catalog number D1973-3c. This 38mm silver medal was struck at the United States Mint in Philadelphia as a memorial to Jim Thorpe. After his remarkable Olympic triumph in 1912, Thorpe embarked on a multi-sport professional career that included six seasons of major league baseball and numerous years of professional football. He served as the first president of the American Professional Football Association in 1920, the organization that became the National Football League in 1922. Thorpe was named to the inaugural class of the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1963, and in 1999 the Associated Press named him the Greatest Athlete of the 20th Century. He died on March 28, 1953, in Lomita, California. The Swoger catalog (D-series), compiled by Tom Swoger, documents modern U.S. Mint commemorative medals from 1956 onward. This 38mm silver is the standard-size precious-metal issue in the Jim Thorpe series.
