Strike TypeCoin Details
Description
This 1973-P large medal from the Philadelphia Mint honors Jim Thorpe, widely regarded as the greatest athlete of the twentieth century. Thorpe, a Sac and Fox Nation member from Oklahoma, won gold medals in the pentathlon and decathlon at the 1912 Stockholm Olympics, excelled in professional football and baseball, and demonstrated athletic versatility that has never been equaled. His Olympic medals were controversially stripped in 1913 when it was discovered he had played semi-professional baseball, but were posthumously restored in 1983. Private medal producers including the Franklin Mint, Medallic Art Company, and numerous smaller firms have supplemented U.S. Mint production, creating a rich and diverse medallic landscape for American collectors. The large format Philadelphia Mint medal provides a substantial canvas for honoring Thorpe's extraordinary athletic achievements and his significance as a Native American icon.
