Description
Swoger catalog number D1973-3f. This 38mm bronze medal was struck at the United States Mint in Philadelphia as a memorial to Jim Thorpe. The small-format bronze medal offered the most affordable option for collectors honoring Thorpe's athletic legacy. In addition to his Olympic, football, and baseball achievements, Thorpe also briefly played professional basketball and was an accomplished amateur boxer and swimmer. His versatility across sports has never been matched — no other athlete has competed at elite levels in football, baseball, basketball, and Olympic track and field events. The Associated Press voted Thorpe the Greatest Athlete of the First Half of the Century in 1950 and the Greatest Athlete of the 20th Century in 1999. The Swoger catalog (D-series), compiled by Tom Swoger, documents modern U.S. Mint commemorative medals from 1956 onward.
