Description
Swoger catalog number D1973-2d. This 76mm bronze medal was struck at the United States Mint in Philadelphia to commemorate the centennial of San Francisco's cable car system, the last manually operated cable car system in the world. Andrew Smith Hallidie conducted the first successful test of his cable car on Clay Street Hill on August 2, 1873, revolutionizing urban transit on San Francisco's notoriously steep hills. At its peak, the cable car network included 23 lines covering over 100 miles of track. By the 1973 centennial, only three lines remained in operation, but the system had been designated a National Historic Landmark in 1964 and remains one of San Francisco's most iconic attractions. The "AE" designation indicates bronze composition. The Swoger catalog (D-series), compiled by Tom Swoger, documents modern U.S. Mint commemorative medals from 1956 onward.
