1973-P Brass Medal D1973-4b, Adams & Henry Bicentennial
Strike Type
Coin Details
Description
Swoger catalog number D1973-4b. This brass medal was struck at the United States Mint in Philadelphia to honor the bicentennial of Samuel Adams and Patrick Henry. Adams and Henry represented the radical wing of the Patriot movement — Adams was described by Thomas Jefferson as "truly the Man of the Revolution" for his decades of tireless agitation against British authority in Massachusetts. Henry's oratorical genius made him the voice of revolution in Virginia, and his opposition to the Constitution later helped secure adoption of the Bill of Rights. The brass composition gives this medal a golden appearance at a lower cost than gold or gilt-bronze. The Swoger catalog (D-series), compiled by Tom Swoger, documents modern U.S. Mint commemorative medals from 1956 onward. This brass version is a distinctive alternative to the silver and bronze issues in the D1973-4 series.
