Description
This 1973 medal commemorates the Vietnam Peace Agreement, formally known as the Paris Peace Accords, signed on January 27, 1973. The accords, negotiated by Henry Kissinger and Le Duc Tho, established a ceasefire and provided for the withdrawal of American forces from Vietnam, ending direct U.S. military involvement in the conflict. The agreement earned Kissinger and Le Duc Tho the Nobel Peace Prize, though Tho declined it. While the accords temporarily halted fighting, North Vietnam ultimately conquered South Vietnam in April 1975. Medal collecting has experienced renewed interest in recent decades as numismatists have recognized these pieces as historical artifacts deserving the same scholarly attention given to coins and currency. This medal marks the moment when Americans believed the Vietnam War had ended, a brief interlude of hope before the fall of Saigon revealed the peace as temporary.
