Coin Details
Description
Swoger catalog number D1972-3b. This large-format bronze medal was struck at the United States Mint in Philadelphia for Transpo '72, the International Transportation Exposition held at Dulles International Airport in 1972. The exposition was a major showcase for the Department of Transportation, which had been established only six years earlier in 1966 under President Lyndon Johnson. Transpo '72 featured working demonstrations of futuristic transportation technologies, including people movers, monorails, and tracked air-cushion vehicles, alongside displays of historical transportation artifacts. The larger format provides enhanced detail for the medal's transportation-themed designs. The Swoger catalog (D-series), compiled by Tom Swoger, documents modern U.S. Mint commemorative medals from 1956 onward.
