Description
Swoger catalog number D1972-3a. This standard-size bronze medal was struck at the United States Mint in Philadelphia for Transpo '72, the International Transportation Exposition held at Dulles International Airport near Washington, D.C., from May 27 to June 4, 1972. Organized by the U.S. Department of Transportation, Transpo '72 showcased innovations in air, land, water, and space transportation, drawing over one million visitors to the nine-day event. Exhibits included experimental personal rapid transit systems, vertical takeoff aircraft, and early mass transit prototypes. Dulles Airport itself, designed by Eero Saarinen and opened in 1962, served as both venue and exhibit of modern transportation architecture. The Swoger catalog (D-series), compiled by Tom Swoger, documents modern U.S. Mint commemorative medals from 1956 onward. This small bronze is the most compact issue in the D1972-3 Transpo series.
