(1972)-FM Medal Iwo Jima Silver
Strike TypeCoin Details
Description
This 1972 Franklin Mint silver medal commemorates the Battle of Iwo Jima, one of the bloodiest and most iconic engagements of World War II in the Pacific Theater. The battle, fought from February 19 to March 26, 1945, resulted in the deaths of nearly 7,000 American Marines and virtually the entire Japanese garrison of over 20,000 defenders. The raising of the American flag on Mount Suribachi, captured in Joe Rosenthal's Pulitzer Prize-winning photograph, became the most famous image of the war and the basis for the Marine Corps War Memorial in Arlington, Virginia. The Franklin Mint produced this silver medal as part of its military history series, using sterling silver composition to create a lasting tribute to the sacrifice of the Marines who fought on this volcanic island 750 miles south of Tokyo.
