Description
Swoger catalog number D1971-2a. This silver medal was struck at the United States Mint in Philadelphia to honor Jose Antonio Navarro, a Texas founding father born on February 27, 1795, in San Antonio de Bexar. Navarro was one of only two native-born Texans to sign the Texas Declaration of Independence on March 2, 1836. He served in the Congress of the Republic of Texas and later in the Texas State Senate following annexation. A close friend of Stephen F. Austin, Navarro was instrumental in securing Mexican government approval for Anglo-American colonization of Texas. He was captured during the ill-fated Mier Expedition of 1842 and imprisoned in Mexico for three years before escaping. His home in San Antonio is preserved as the Casa Navarro State Historic Site. The Swoger catalog (D-series), compiled by Tom Swoger, documents modern U.S. Mint commemorative medals from 1956 onward.
