This silver medal was struck at the United States Mint in Philadelphia to honor Ohio Northern University, a private university in Ada, Ohio, founded in 1871 by Henry Solomon Lehr as the Northwestern Ohio Normal School. The institution grew from a teacher-training school into a comprehensive university offering programs in law, pharmacy, engineering, and the arts and sciences. By its centennial in 1971, Ohio Northern had established a reputation particularly for its Pettit College of Law and its pharmacy program. The university is affiliated with the United Methodist Church and maintains a strong liberal arts tradition. The Swoger catalog (D-series), compiled by Tom Swoger, documents modern U.S. The American Liberty medal series, launched as a modern artistic initiative, features innovative designs that push the boundaries of traditional numismatic imagery while maintaining the technical excellence expected of official U.S. Mint productions.
