Strike Type
Coin Details
Description
This 34mm medal featuring James Monroe is a Type-2 version of the Indian Peace Medal restrike series, produced during the 1970s by the U.S. Mint. The Type-2 variant differs from the Type-1 (PCGS #509800) in die characteristics, involving the portrait or edge treatment. Monroe's presidency saw the promulgation of the Monroe Doctrine in 1823, asserting American influence over the Western Hemisphere, while domestically pursuing Indian removal policies that would accelerate under his successors. Indian Peace Medals from the Monroe era document a particularly active period of American-Indian diplomacy, with numerous treaties signed that reshaped the geographic and political landscape of the continent. The "Peace and Friendship" design on the reverse β clasped hands beneath crossed tomahawk and peace pipe β remained consistent across presidential administrations, while the obverse portrait was updated for each president. This restrike makes Monroe's version of this historically important series accessible to modern collectors.
