Coin Details
Description
This 34mm medal featuring James Monroe is a Type-1 version of the Indian Peace Medal restrike series, produced during the 1970s. Monroe, the fifth president (1817-1825), presided over the "Era of Good Feelings" while simultaneously overseeing significant westward expansion and Indian removal policies. Original Monroe Indian Peace Medals were distributed to Native American leaders during his administration's extensive treaty-making activities, which relocated numerous eastern tribes west of the Mississippi River. The Peace and Friendship reverse design common to the series belied the increasingly coercive nature of American Indian policy under Monroe, making these medals complex historical artifacts. The 1970s restrike program reproduced the original Monroe portrait in the standardized 34mm format, providing collectors with an affordable example of a medal type whose originals can sell for tens of thousands of dollars. The Type-1 designation distinguishes this from a variant with different die characteristics.
