Description

This 34mm medal featuring James Madison is a Type-2 version of the Indian Peace Medal restrike series, produced during the 1970s by the U.S. Mint. The Type-2 designation indicates a variant of the Madison Peace Medal distinct from the Type-1 version (PCGS #408670), with differences in the portrait style, edge treatment, or die variety. The original Madison Indian Peace Medals, produced during his presidency from 1809 to 1817, were presented to Native American leaders during treaty negotiations and diplomatic meetings. The "Peace and Friendship" reverse design, featuring clasped hands beneath a tomahawk and peace pipe, was one of the most enduring symbols of American Indian diplomacy. The 1970s restrike program made all presidential Peace Medal designs from Washington through Lincoln available to collectors in a standardized 34mm format, creating a comprehensive set that documents the evolution of presidential portraiture and American diplomatic medallic art across the early republic.
