Description

This 34mm medal featuring James Madison is a Type-1 version of the Indian Peace Medal restrike series, produced during the 1970s. Indian Peace Medals were originally given to Native American chiefs and leaders by U.S. presidents as symbols of alliance and diplomacy from the administration of George Washington through at least Abraham Lincoln. The originals are among the most historically significant and valuable American medals. Madison served as the fourth president (1809-1817) during a period of intense interaction with Native American nations, including the War of 1812 and the Creek War. The 1970s restrike program by the U.S. Mint reproduced the original Peace and Friendship design β€” featuring clasped hands on the reverse β€” making these historic designs available to collectors. The Type-1 designation distinguishes this from a Type-2 variant, differing in obverse portrait style or edge treatment.
