Description
This 34mm Denver Mint medal featuring Zachary Taylor is part of the Indian Peace Medal restrike series produced during the 1970s. Taylor, the twelfth president (1849-1850), was a career military officer whose victories in the Mexican-American War propelled him to the presidency. Known as "Old Rough and Ready," Taylor had extensive personal experience with Native Americans through his military career, including service in the Black Hawk War and the Second Seminole War. His brief presidency — he died just sixteen months into his term — limited the production of original Taylor Peace Medals, making them relatively scarce among the presidential issues. The "Peace and Friendship" reverse continued on Taylor's medals. Taylor's military background created an unusual dynamic in the Peace Medal tradition: a president who had personally fought Native Americans now presenting medals symbolizing peace and friendship. The Denver Mint restrike provides access to this historically complex president's Peace Medal.
Rarity Notes
Common. Denver Mint 1970s restrike. Taylor's brief presidency means fewer original Peace Medals were produced.
