Description
This 34mm Denver Mint medal featuring Thomas Jefferson is part of the Indian Peace Medal restrike series produced during the 1970s. Jefferson, the third president (1801-1809), had a particularly significant relationship with Native Americans through the Lewis and Clark Expedition (1804-1806), during which specially commissioned Indian Peace Medals bearing Jefferson's portrait were distributed to tribal leaders across the newly acquired Louisiana Territory. These Jefferson Peace Medals are among the most famous and historically important in the entire series, directly associated with one of the greatest exploration expeditions in American history. Original Jefferson Peace Medals discovered along the Lewis and Clark trail are among the most prized American numismatic artifacts. The Denver Mint restrike makes Jefferson's iconic Peace Medal design accessible to collectors, with the D mint mark providing variety within the comprehensive 1970s restrike program.
