Description

This 34mm Denver Mint medal featuring John Tyler is part of the Indian Peace Medal restrike series produced during the 1970s. Tyler, the tenth president (1841-1845), assumed office after the death of William Henry Harrison just one month into his term — the first vice-presidential succession in American history. His accession established the precedent that the Vice President becomes the actual President rather than merely an acting one. Tyler's Indian policy continued westward expansion, with the annexation of Texas in 1845 creating new frontiers of conflict with Native American nations. Original Tyler Indian Peace Medals bear the "Peace and Friendship" reverse design, as the transition to the "Indian Peace" reverse occurred later in the series. Tyler is one of the more obscure presidents in the popular imagination, but his Indian Peace Medals document a presidency that established crucial constitutional precedents while pursuing aggressive territorial expansion.

Rarity Notes

Common. Denver Mint 1970s restrike. Tyler is a less prominent presidential subject but important for the complete series.
