(1970s)-D Medal James Monroe 34mm Peace and Friendship
Strike Type
Coin Details
Description
This 34mm Denver Mint medal featuring James Monroe is part of the Indian Peace Medal restrike series produced during the 1970s. This Denver Mint version complements the Philadelphia-struck Type-1 (PCGS #509800) and Type-2 (PCGS #408673) versions. Monroe's presidency (1817-1825) saw extensive treaty-making with Native American nations, particularly in the Southeast and the Great Lakes region, as the administration pursued policies that would eventually lead to the Indian Removal Act under his successor Andrew Jackson. Monroe articulated the doctrine bearing his name in 1823, asserting American hegemony over the Western Hemisphere, while domestically his administration signed dozens of treaties that progressively reduced Native American territorial holdings. The Peace and Friendship reverse design on the Monroe medal represents the diplomatic language of these negotiations, even as the practical outcomes increasingly favored American expansion at the expense of indigenous sovereignty.
