(1970s)-D Medal James Madison 34mm Peace and Friendship
Strike Type
Coin Details
Description
This 34mm Denver Mint medal featuring James Madison is part of the Indian Peace Medal restrike series produced during the 1970s. This Denver Mint version complements the Philadelphia-struck Type-1 (PCGS #408670) and Type-2 (PCGS #511087) versions, providing a mint mark variety for collectors. Madison's presidency (1809-1817) encompassed the War of 1812, during which Indian alliances played a crucial military role — most notably Tecumseh's confederation, which allied with the British against the United States. Madison's Peace Medals were distributed to tribal leaders who maintained friendly relations with the United States during this conflict, making them instruments of wartime diplomacy as well as peacetime symbolism. The Denver Mint mark on this 1970s restrike adds a collecting dimension absent from the original nineteenth-century production, which occurred exclusively at the Philadelphia Mint.
