Description
This 34mm Denver Mint medal featuring James Buchanan is part of the Indian Peace Medal restrike series produced during the 1970s. Buchanan, the fifteenth president (1857-1861), served during the final years before the Civil War, a period when the Indian frontier was expanding rapidly into the Great Plains and Pacific Northwest. His administration negotiated treaties with numerous western tribes while simultaneously failing to address the sectional crisis that would tear the nation apart. Original Buchanan Indian Peace Medals bear the "Indian Peace" reverse design and were distributed during treaty councils across the western territories. Buchanan is generally ranked among the least effective presidents due to his failure to prevent the secession crisis, but his Indian Peace Medals document the continuing American policy of diplomatic engagement with Native American nations through the standard medallic format. The Denver Mint restrike provides collectors with a complete set including this less prominent but historically significant president.
Rarity Notes
Common. Denver Mint 1970s restrike. Buchanan is among the less collected presidents but essential for a complete series.
