Description
This 34mm Denver Mint medal featuring George Washington is part of the Indian Peace Medal restrike series produced during the 1970s. Washington established the tradition of presenting peace medals to Native American leaders, using the practice as a diplomatic tool during the formative years of the republic. The original Washington Indian Peace Medals, with the "Peace and Friendship" reverse showing clasped hands, are among the rarest and most valuable American medals, with original examples selling for hundreds of thousands of dollars. Washington's Indian policy attempted to balance westward expansion with formal treaty relationships, establishing precedents that would be followed (and often violated) by subsequent administrations. The Denver Mint restrike makes Washington's Peace Medal design accessible to collectors who could never hope to acquire an original. As the first in the presidential Peace Medal series, the Washington design holds special significance for completists.
Rarity Notes
Common. Denver Mint 1970s restrike. The most popular subject in the Indian Peace Medal series due to Washington's foundational role.
