Description
This 34mm Denver Mint medal featuring Franklin Pierce is part of the Indian Peace Medal restrike series produced during the 1970s. Pierce, the fourteenth president (1853-1857), served during a period of increasing sectional tension over slavery that would eventually lead to the Civil War. His Indian policy continued the pattern of westward expansion and treaty-making that characterized the antebellum period, with the Kansas-Nebraska Act of 1854 opening new territories to settlement and intensifying conflict with the Native American nations who inhabited those lands. Original Pierce Indian Peace Medals feature the "Indian Peace" reverse design and were distributed to tribal leaders during treaty negotiations across the frontier. Pierce is one of the less collected presidents in the Indian Peace Medal series, making the 1970s restrike an opportunity for collectors to acquire this design at modest cost. The Denver Mint mark provides a variety distinction within the restrike program.
Rarity Notes
