Description
This 34mm Denver Mint medal featuring Andrew Johnson is part of the Indian Peace Medal restrike series produced during the 1970s. Johnson, the seventeenth president (1865-1869), assumed office following Lincoln's assassination and presided over the tumultuous early years of Reconstruction. His Indian Peace Medals featured the distinctive "Indian Peace" reverse design rather than the earlier "Peace and Friendship" motif, reflecting an evolution in the series that occurred during and after the Civil War. Original Johnson Peace Medals were distributed during a period of increasing conflict with western tribes, as the completion of the transcontinental railroad and the post-war westward migration brought settlers into direct competition with Native American nations for land and resources. The Denver Mint restrike brings this chapter of American Indian diplomacy to modern collectors, with the D mint mark providing a variety distinct from the Philadelphia production.
Rarity Notes
Common. Denver Mint 1970s restrike. Indian Peace reverse variant rather than Peace and Friendship.
