(1970s)-D Medal Andrew Jackson 34mm Peace and Friendship
Strike Type
Coin Details
Description
This 34mm Denver Mint medal featuring Andrew Jackson is part of the Indian Peace Medal restrike series produced during the 1970s. The "D" mint mark indicates striking at the Denver Mint, distinguishing this from Philadelphia Mint versions. Jackson, the seventh president (1829-1837), had one of the most significant and controversial relationships with Native Americans of any president, culminating in the Indian Removal Act of 1830 and the Trail of Tears forced relocation of the Cherokee and other southeastern tribes. The original Jackson Indian Peace Medals were distributed to tribal leaders even as his administration pursued policies of forced removal, creating a profound historical irony. The "Peace and Friendship" design on these medals stood in stark contrast to the reality of Jackson's Indian policy. Denver Mint production of the 1970s restrike series created mint mark varieties that added a collecting dimension beyond the presidential portrait differences.
Rarity Notes
Common. Denver Mint 1970s restrike. The D mint mark variety adds modest numismatic interest.
