Coin Details
Description
This 1970 aluminum "Freedom America" token at 34mm diameter is part of a patriotic token series produced in multiple metals. The 1970 date places this during a period of intense national debate over the Vietnam War and social upheaval, when expressions of patriotism took on particular significance. The "Freedom America" theme reflects the era's contested patriotic discourse, with different Americans interpreting freedom in dramatically different ways. This aluminum version was the most affordable of the three metal varieties (aluminum, brass, and nickel-brass), making it accessible for wide distribution. The 34mm diameter provided a substantial canvas for patriotic imagery. Patriotic tokens have been produced throughout American history, with periods of national stress generating the greatest volume of production.
