Coin Details
Description
Swoger catalog number D1970-4b. This standard-size silver medal was struck at the United States Mint in Philadelphia to commemorate the Stone Mountain Confederate Memorial. The bas-relief carving, measuring 190 feet wide and 90 feet tall on the north face of Stone Mountain near Atlanta, Georgia, depicts Confederate President Jefferson Davis and Generals Robert E. Lee and Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson mounted on horseback. The Stone Mountain memorial had been in various stages of planning and construction since 1916, and by 1970 the carving was nearing completion under sculptor Walter Hancock (it was finished in 1972). The Swoger catalog (D-series), compiled by Tom Swoger, documents modern U.S. Mint commemorative medals from 1956 onward. This small-format silver is a companion to the D1970-4a silver version.
Rarity Notes
