Description
Swoger catalog number D1970-4a. This silver medal was struck at the United States Mint in Philadelphia to commemorate the Stone Mountain Confederate Memorial near Atlanta, Georgia. The carving on Stone Mountain, the largest bas-relief sculpture in the world, depicts three Confederate leaders on horseback — President Jefferson Davis, General Robert E. Lee, and General Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson — carved into the north face of the granite monadnock. The project was originally conceived in 1912 by the United Daughters of the Confederacy and initial work was begun by Gutzon Borglum (who later sculpted Mount Rushmore) in 1923. After decades of interruption, the carving was completed in 1972 by Walter Kirkland Hancock and Roy Faulkner using thermo-jet torches. The "AR" designation indicates silver composition. The Swoger catalog (D-series), compiled by Tom Swoger, documents modern U.S. Mint commemorative medals from 1956 onward.
