Coin Details
Description
Swoger catalog number D1970-3a. This silver medal was struck at the United States Mint in Philadelphia to commemorate the centennial of the American Fisheries Society. Founded in 1870 as the American Fish Culturists' Association, the organization is the oldest and largest professional society dedicated to fisheries science in North America. The society was established in response to growing concerns about declining fish populations in American rivers and lakes caused by industrialization, dam construction, and overfishing. By its centennial in 1970, the American Fisheries Society had become the leading voice for aquatic resource conservation and fisheries management, publishing the field's most respected journals and setting standards for fisheries practice. The Swoger catalog (D-series), compiled by Tom Swoger, documents modern U.S. Mint commemorative medals from 1956 onward.
