Description
Swoger catalog number D1970-1a. This silver medal was struck at the United States Mint in Philadelphia to commemorate the centennial of Wichita, Kansas. Wichita was incorporated as a city in 1870, growing from a trading post established by Jesse Chisholm on the banks of the Arkansas River. The city became a major stop on the Chisholm Trail, the famous cattle drive route from Texas to the Kansas railheads, and earned the nickname "Cowtown." By its centennial in 1970, Wichita had transformed into the "Air Capital of the World," home to major aircraft manufacturers including Beech Aircraft, Cessna, and Boeing's Stearman Division, producing a substantial portion of the world's general aviation aircraft. The Swoger catalog (D-series), compiled by Tom Swoger, documents modern U.S. Mint commemorative medals from 1956 onward.
