1970-P Medal S. Carolina Large Gold
Strike TypeCoin Details
Description
This 1970-P large gold medal from the Philadelphia Mint commemorates the tricentennial of South Carolina, which was established as a proprietary colony in 1670. South Carolina's 300th anniversary celebration in 1970 was a major statewide event honoring three centuries of history from the colonial era through the Revolution, the antebellum period, the Civil War, and the civil rights movement. The large gold format represents the most prestigious version of the tricentennial medal, intended for presentation to dignitaries and institutional collections. Medal collecting has experienced renewed interest in recent decades as numismatists have recognized these pieces as historical artifacts deserving the same scholarly attention given to coins and currency. South Carolina's historical significance — as one of the original thirteen colonies, the first state to secede from the Union, and the site of the first shots of the Civil War at Fort Sumter — justified an extensive commemorative program.
