Description

Swoger catalog number D1970-2c. This 76mm matte silver medal was struck at the United States Mint in Philadelphia to commemorate the tricentennial of the founding of South Carolina. The Carolina colony was established in 1670 when English settlers aboard the Carolina arrived at Albemarle Point on the Ashley River, later relocating to the present site of Charleston. South Carolina was one of the original thirteen colonies and played significant roles in both the American Revolution and the Civil War — the first shots of the Civil War were fired at Fort Sumter in Charleston Harbor on April 12, 1861. The 76mm matte silver format represents the premium large-format issue in the D1970-2 series. The Swoger catalog (D-series), compiled by Tom Swoger, documents modern U.S. Mint commemorative medals from 1956 onward.

Rarity Notes

Large-format 76mm matte silver medal — the premier South Carolina tricentennial issue. Silver composition and large size ensure limited production. Exact mintage not separately reported.
