Description

Swoger catalog number D1970-4c. This 76mm matte bronze medal was struck at the United States Mint in Philadelphia to commemorate the Stone Mountain Confederate Memorial near Atlanta, Georgia. The massive granite monadnock rises 825 feet above the surrounding piedmont and serves as the canvas for the world's largest bas-relief sculpture. The memorial project has a complex history — Gutzon Borglum began carving in 1923 but left after disputes with the Stone Mountain Confederate Monumental Association; Augustus Lukeman continued from 1925 to 1928 before funding ran out; and the carving was finally completed between 1964 and 1972 by Walter Hancock. The Swoger catalog (D-series), compiled by Tom Swoger, documents modern U.S. Mint commemorative medals from 1956 onward. This 76mm bronze is the large-format base-metal issue in the D1970-4 series.
