Description

Swoger catalog number D1970-2e. This 76mm matte bronze medal was struck at the United States Mint in Philadelphia to commemorate the tricentennial of South Carolina's founding in 1670. The Carolina colony was one of the most prosperous in British North America, and South Carolina played outsized roles in American history, from the decisive Revolutionary War battles at Kings Mountain and Cowpens to the secession crisis that began the Civil War. The tricentennial celebrations in 1970 marked three centuries since the first permanent English settlers arrived in the region. The 76mm matte bronze format provides the large-format presentation at an accessible price point. The Swoger catalog (D-series), compiled by Tom Swoger, documents modern U.S. Silver medals from the U.S. Mint combine precious metal content with official government production, creating collectible pieces that carry both numismatic and bullion value for buyers and investors. Mint commemorative medals from 1956 onward.
