Strike Type
Coin Details
Description
Swoger catalog number D1970-5d. This bronze lacquered medal was struck at the United States Mint in Philadelphia to commemorate the centennial of the United States Weather Service. The Weather Bureau was established within the Department of War by a joint resolution of Congress signed by President Ulysses S. Grant on February 9, 1870, under the direction of Brigadier General Albert J. Myer. The service was transferred to the Department of Agriculture in 1891 and to the Department of Commerce in 1940, eventually becoming the National Weather Service within NOAA in 1970 — the same year as this centennial medal. The lacquered bronze finish provides a protective coating that preserves the medal's appearance. The Swoger catalog (D-series), compiled by Tom Swoger, documents modern U.S. Mint commemorative medals from 1956 onward.
Rarity Notes
Bronze lacquered medal commemorating the Weather Service centennial. The lacquered finish is an uncommon treatment for U.S. Mint medals. Exact mintage not separately reported.
