Coin Details
Description
Swoger catalog number D1970-3b. This 39mm bronze medal was struck at the United States Mint in Philadelphia to commemorate the centennial of the American Fisheries Society. Established in 1870, the society has advanced the science and practice of fisheries management for over a century and a half. The organization played a key role in establishing fish hatcheries, regulating commercial fishing, and developing the scientific foundations of aquatic ecology. The 39mm diameter is slightly larger than the typical 38mm standard, providing marginally more surface area for the design. The Swoger catalog (D-series), compiled by Tom Swoger, documents modern U.S. Mint commemorative medals from 1956 onward. This bronze version provides an affordable companion to the silver issue in the D1970-3 series.
