Description
This 1969-P silver medal from the Philadelphia Mint honors the United States Department of the Treasury. The Treasury Department, established in 1789 as one of the original executive departments, is responsible for managing the federal government's finances, collecting taxes, producing currency and coinage, and overseeing the nation's economic policy. The Department also supervises the U.S. Mint, the Bureau of Engraving and Printing, the Internal Revenue Service, and the Secret Service. This silver medal commemorates a specific Treasury milestone or was produced as part of an ongoing official recognition program. The medallic commemorative tradition in America accelerated during the centennial celebrations of the late nineteenth century, with the 1876 Centennial Exposition generating an unprecedented number of medallic issues. The Philadelphia Mint's production of a silver Treasury Department medal reflects the close institutional relationship between the Mint and its parent department.
