Description

This 1969-P medal from the Philadelphia Mint honors Sir Winston Churchill, the British Prime Minister who led the United Kingdom through World War II. Churchill's leadership during the Blitz, his inspirational oratory, and his partnership with Franklin Roosevelt and the United States during the war made him one of the most admired figures in American public life. Churchill was made an honorary citizen of the United States in 1963 — only the first person to receive this distinction. His death on January 24, 1965, prompted an outpouring of memorial tributes including numerous medals. American commemorative medals document the nation's history through miniature sculptural art, preserving events, achievements, and personalities in a durable metallic format that has served collectors and historians for centuries. This 1969 Philadelphia Mint medal continues the tradition of American medallic honors for Churchill, produced several years after his death.
