Description
This 1969 sterling silver medal depicting New York is part of the Franklin Mint's States of the Union series. New York, the eleventh state to ratify the Constitution in 1788, has been the most commercially and culturally influential state in American history, home to the nation's largest city and its financial capital. From the Dutch founding of New Amsterdam through the Erie Canal era, the Gilded Age, and the twentieth century, New York's history encompasses virtually every major theme in American development. The medal captures the Empire State's significance through representative imagery. New York medals from the States of the Union series are among the most commonly available individual pieces, reflecting the enormous collector population in the New York metropolitan area that subscribed to the original Franklin Mint program.
