Strike TypeCoin Details
Description
This 32mm bronze medal produced in 1967 by Medallic Art Company of New York honors T. Coleman du Pont, a member of the du Pont family that has been one of the most influential families in American industrial, political, and cultural life since the early nineteenth century. T. Coleman du Pont (1863-1930) was president of E. I. du Pont de Nemours and Company and later served as a United States Senator from Delaware. He is best known for personally financing and constructing the Coleman du Pont Highway, a 100-mile road through Delaware that he donated to the state — one of the most remarkable private contributions to public infrastructure in American history. The 32mm bronze format is a standard cabinet size suitable for collections and displays. Medallic Art Company produced numerous medals honoring prominent American industrialists and public figures, and the du Pont family's enormous contributions to American industry, science, and public life made them natural subjects for medallic commemoration.
