Description

This 1967 matte bronze medal commemorates the Battle of El Alamein, the decisive World War II engagement fought in North Africa in October-November 1942. The battle, in which British Commonwealth forces under Field Marshal Bernard Montgomery defeated German Afrika Korps commander Erwin Rommel, was a turning point in the North African campaign and one of the first major Allied victories of the war. Winston Churchill famously said of El Alamein: "Before Alamein we never had a victory. After Alamein we never had a defeat." The 1967 date marks the twenty-fifth anniversary of the battle. Medal iconography provides insight into how Americans have understood and represented their history, with evolving artistic conventions reflecting changing cultural values and aesthetic preferences across different eras. The matte bronze finish gives this commemorative a dignified, understated appearance appropriate to a military memorial.
