Description
The 1966 Assay Commission medal in bronze, cataloged as JK-AC-110, features Henry H. Fowler, who served as Secretary of the Treasury from 1965 to 1968 under President Johnson. Fowler inherited the enormous challenge of implementing the Coinage Act of 1965 and managing the transition from silver to clad coinage. The "AE" designation confirms the standard bronze composition. The 1966 commission was the first to test the new copper-nickel clad coinage, requiring updated assaying procedures to verify the novel compositions. Fowler was also responsible for overseeing the Mint during the coin shortage crisis that had preceded the composition change, when hoarding of silver coins created severe circulation problems. His appearance on the Assay Commission medal honored his management of one of the most significant transitions in American monetary history since the abandonment of the gold standard.
