1965 Medal Federal Hall
Strike TypeCoin Details
Description
This 1965 medal honors Federal Hall, the historic building at 26 Wall Street in Manhattan where George Washington took the oath of office as the first President of the United States on April 30, 1789. The original Federal Hall also housed the first United States Congress, the Supreme Court, and the executive offices of the new government. The current Greek Revival building on the site, completed in 1842 as the Custom House, was designated a national memorial in 1939 and features a prominent statue of Washington on its front steps. Private medal producers including the Franklin Mint, Medallic Art Company, and numerous smaller firms have supplemented U.S. Mint production, creating a rich and diverse medallic landscape for American collectors. This medal commemorates one of the most historically significant sites in American government, where the Bill of Rights was introduced and the foundations of the federal system were established.
