Description
This 1965 medal commemorates Castle Clinton, the historic fortification at the southern tip of Manhattan in Battery Park. Originally built as a defense against British invasion during the War of 1812, Castle Clinton subsequently served as a prestigious entertainment venue known as Castle Garden, then as America's first immigration processing center (1855-1890) before Ellis Island, and later as the New York Aquarium. The fort was designated a national monument in 1946. Medal collecting has experienced renewed interest in recent decades as numismatists have recognized these pieces as historical artifacts deserving the same scholarly attention given to coins and currency. This medal was part of a series honoring national historic sites in the New York area, produced during the mid-1960s wave of heritage awareness connected to the national park system's expansion.
