1964 Quarter Pattern - RB-2360, INCO
Strike TypeCoin Details
Description
An INCO experimental quarter designated RB-2360, continuing the RB-23xx sub-series of clad composition test pieces struck on Washington Quarter dies in 1964. The International Nickel Company's testing program produced experimental quarters in a remarkable range of compositions, exploring variations that ranged from subtle adjustments in nickel percentage to fundamentally different approaches to layer construction. Some compositions in the RB-2xxx family tested tri-layer constructions (nickel-alloy cladding over a copper core, the configuration ultimately adopted), while others explored bi-metallic bonding, different core metals, or novel cladding techniques such as electroplating rather than roll bonding. The RB-2360 formulation represents one data point in this extensive experimental matrix. What makes these pieces particularly fascinating from a numismatic perspective is that they are simultaneously patterns — experimental coins struck to test new compositions — and industrial test specimens. They inhabit a boundary between numismatics and metallurgical engineering that is essentially unique in American coinage history. No previous transition in US coinage metals had been accompanied by such a comprehensive, scientifically structured testing program.
Rarity Notes
Extremely rare. Population estimated at 1-5 specimens. Many INCO experimental compositions are known from only a single surviving example.
