Description
This 44mm silver medal produced by Medallic Art Company of New York commemorates the 1964-65 New York World's Fair, one of the most ambitious international expositions of the twentieth century. Held in Flushing Meadows-Corona Park in Queens, the fair ran for two seasons β April through October of both 1964 and 1965 β and attracted over 51 million visitors. The fair's theme, "Peace Through Understanding," was symbolized by the iconic Unisphere, a massive stainless steel globe that remains in the park today. Notable exhibitors included General Motors (whose Futurama ride was the fair's most popular attraction), IBM, Ford, General Electric (with a Disney-designed attraction), and the Vatican (which displayed Michelangelo's Pieta in America for the only time). The 44mm silver composition indicates a premium commemorative produced for fairgoers and collectors desiring a lasting memento in precious metal. Medallic Art Company, headquartered in nearby New York, was a natural choice for producing fair medals, and the World's Fair silver medal combines the artistic quality of MACO's best work with the nostalgic appeal of one of the twentieth century's great public events.
