Description
This matte silver medal depicting Harry S. Truman was produced in 1963 by Medallic Art Company of New York. Truman, who left the presidency in January 1953, spent his post-presidential years in Independence, Missouri, where he established the Truman Library and remained active in Democratic politics. By 1963, Truman's reputation was undergoing significant rehabilitation as historians and the public began to appreciate the difficult decisions he had faced — the atomic bomb, the Marshall Plan, NATO, the Berlin Airlift, and Korea — and the courage with which he had made them. The matte silver finish gives the medal a contemplative, dignified character appropriate to a post-presidential portrait of a leader whose greatest achievements were being recognized with increasing clarity. Medallic Art Company's matte silver presidential portrait series represents some of the firm's finest artistic work, with the specialized surface treatment enhancing the sculptural quality of each portrait. Truman would live until December 1972, and this 1963 medal captures him during a period when his historical legacy was being positively reassessed.
